February is the month of love, making it the perfect time to talk about one of the most common design challenges we see—creating a home that reflects the personalities of both partners. When two people have different styles, designing a space that feels cohesive can seem daunting, but it’s absolutely possible! The key? A thoughtful, balanced approach that ensures no one feels left out of the process or the final design.

Here’s how we help couples blend their styles beautifully to create a home they both love:

1. We Always Encourage Exploration & Honesty in Design Decisions

The most successful designs begin with open and honest communication. We encourage both partners to share their likes, dislikes, and must-haves right from the start—because the more we understand about each person’s style, the better we can create a design that speaks to both.

Our process is designed to make these conversations feel effortless, ensuring that each person’s voice is heard and respected. Whether it’s a love for bold color or a preference for neutral tones, we take it all into account to craft a design that feels personal and intentional! If one person prefers bold colors, which is often seen in maximalist design, those can be easily incorporated as accents in the room as a whole. This living room design by Jessica Helgerson is a great example of a mix of distinctly modern design and classic, traditional design. The modern design elements highlight clean lines and simplicity, while the traditional elements highlight warmth and elegance.

2. We Have the Expertise to Blend Styles Beautifully

Merging two distinct aesthetics is an art, and it’s one we’ve mastered. Through a careful balance of textures, colors, and design elements, we seamlessly blend styles to create a home that feels harmonious rather than conflicting. A recent project that we combined styles in was this stunning gathering room. The husband of the couple wanted blue accents in a traditional fashion, while the wife wanted more modern finishings. We chose this beautiful blue ottoman and added a deep blue to the ceiling to satisfy the wishlist item of blue accents and modern pieces like the black cabinet.

We continued the combination of styles across the room with a unique console by Barclay Butera of Lexington that converts into a desk. This piece combines a traditional style with modern functionality!

Whether it’s mixing modern with traditional, softening a bold look with subtle accents, or finding a common thread between two seemingly opposite preferences, we have the expertise to make it all come together beautifully. The result? A home that feels effortlessly sophisticated and completely you—both of you.

3. We Tell Couples to Expect Compromise & Flexibility

Compromise is essential when designing a shared space. That doesn’t mean anyone has to sacrifice their style, but it does mean prioritizing what matters most and being flexible with the details! Styles can easily be mixed and balanced even if it is unexpected! For example, this design (from an article written by Kelsey Clark with Heavenly) highlights several examples of mixed styles that would be considered opposing. This particular style combines elements of farmhouse design through the shiplap, brick, and ceiling beams with a more glam, modern trendy design through the patterned wallpaper and modern finishes.

We help our clients navigate this process by identifying the must-have elements for each person and finding creative ways to incorporate them. Whether that’s through statement pieces, subtle nods to personal style, or a thoughtfully curated blend of design choices, we ensure the final result feels balanced and intentional.

A Home That Reflects Both of You

At the end of the day, your home should feel like a true reflection of both of you—a space that tells your story and feels effortlessly livable. Our goal is to make the process easy, enjoyable, and even fun, ensuring that the journey to your dream home is just as rewarding as the final reveal.
