How to Help our Community | A Season of Giving

Christmas is a season of giving and joy! Many of us would love to help the people in our community, especially with the recent tornados that hit in and around Nashville, the cold weather settling in, poverty, addictions, and other issues. I would like to share a few ways we can give, support, and help the people in our community have a more joyous season.

Tornado Relief

Here are some helpful lists and ways you can aid in tornado relief for our region:

Helping Those in Need in Middle Tennessee

I'd like to share other ways for you to give back and help our fellow humans this Christmas. Even your children can contribute to some of these!

  • Nashville Rescue Mission Only $2.85 is needed to provide a meal this Christmas! Of course, there are year-round needs as well, and they are gathering funds to build a campus for women and children specifically.

  • The Next Door Like many organizations that help people get back on their feet, The Next Door can use donations and help. The Next Door provides both addiction and mental health services to empower women for a lifetime of recovery. With addictions ravishing our country and our community, it's a terrific way to support those fighting to break free. They are a unique organization that does incredible work!

  • Diaper Drive for Ascension Saint Thomas Midtown One of the pastors at my church has let us know of an immediate need for diapers to be donated to families in need preparing to leave the hospital with their newborns. When hospital staff encounter families who are without baby items and have limited means, they provide them with about 3 days worth of diapers (about 50 diapers) and wipes to get the through until they can connect them with a community partner. You can bring diapers to Crievewood United Methodist Church, 451 Hogan Rd, Nashville, by Christmas Eve. Or click here to donate to other programs helping patients at Ascension.

  • Many other organizations would love your help! Graceworks, Community Care Fellowship (helping the homeless), Wounded Warrior Project, One Generation Away (fighting hunger) are just a few. Please give to the organizations of your choice!

Helping Those Beyond Middle Tennessee

I believe strongly in helping our neighbors right here at home, but I also love how our support can so easily reach across the globe in today's world! Here are two of my favorites, that I support. I encourage you to reach beyond our neighborhood as you can, it can truly be life-changing for both giver and receiver.

  • Raise the Roof Academy Providing education and wholistic development in rural Uganda, Raise the Roof focuses on on education, health, income generation, and collaboration with local leaders. Their goal is lasting, region-wide progress, not just temporary assistance, building families and children. My family sponsors a child to attend school at the Academy, and you can do the same. However, there are MANY other ways to give to this organization as well. It is remarkable and beautiful what happens there, I hope you check it out!

  • Mountain T.O.P.  Serving the Cumberland Plateau area of TN, Mountain T.O.P. is a partnership ministry with a goal to help meet the physical, social, emotional, and spiritual needs of all people they encounter, especially in regards to housing.  My family has volunteered here every summer for the past few years, and my son worked as a Project Coordinator this summer. It is a very special place that does wonderful work, and they can always use funds and helping hands.

Wishing you a Joyous Christmas, filled with gratitude, giving, love, and light!

Cheers,

Karen
